I need a few new small rugs. After making rugs with teachers and students over the years I have decided rather than buy rugs I would use and recycle cloth that has been dyed in my indigo vat.
The rugs will need to be small 2’ x 3’ area rugs. I decided to share my progress along with how to make your own rag rug with an opportunity online. You may follow along or order a kit.
Kits are available if you would like to get one. Details for making the rug with your own recycled clothing or dyed cloth will be covered in class.
A few sessions will be scheduled to get you started and to see your progress as well as to share mine.
Rag rugs also makes interesting pillows.
I have always loved the history of making a rag rug and how recycling old clothing scraps were made into rugs for helping to keep floors warm back in the 1800’s.
Ragging is a fun and pretty fast paced handmade activity with beautiful end results.
If ordering a kit expect to receive:
Enough indigo dyed cloth in strips to complete a 2’ x 3’ rug.
Rug backing
Tool for pulling cloth
The only sewing required is finishing edges and this can be hand sewn or with a machine.
Kits are optional.
